The Western Cordillera started its development near the end of the Mesozoic era and the early Cenozoic geologic era. This region mainly covers the Yukon ad British Colombia but, also includes small parts of Alberta and the Northwest Territories. Two major cities in the Western Cordillera are Vancouver and Victoria in British Colombia.

The main types of rock found in this region are Igneous, Metamorphic and Sedimentary rocks. Metallic and non-metallic minerals such as, coal are mined in the Western Cordillera. This region consists of vast forests and numerous orchards that yield grapes, cherries and peaches. This land has many purposes including, but not limited to mineral extraction, fishing and tourism.

An economic activity based on the natural resources in the Western Cordillera is the Mining industry. The mineral extraction process creates many jobs in this area. An environmental issue faced in this region is drought as a result of rain shadows. Drought affects all the living creatures in this region because the fundamental resources for survival such as, water, are limited. This affects the people living in these areas who cannot use many resources in the environment.
