The Innuitian Mountains started its development in the Mesozoic geologic era. This region covers northern Nunavut. Two locations in the Innuitian Mountains are the Pond Inlet and the Broughton Island.

The main type of rock found in this region is Sedimentary rock. However there is also Igneous and Metamorphic rock found in this region. Many gas, mineral and oil deposits have been discovered in this area. The Innuitian mountains is barren because the trees can neither survive the extremely cold winter temperatures nor grow during the short summers. This land has many purposes including, but not limited to oil, gas and mineral extraction.

An economic activity based on the natural resources in the Innuitian Mountains is the recreational industy. Tourists from around the world come to hike the Innuitian Mountains and enjoy its beautiful landscape. An environmental issue found in this region is the extreme cold weathers that limit the sustainability of life in this region. It is a major issue for humans because they cannot complete effective construction on the permafrost that covers these mountains.
